UCC fail Teagasc test

UCC and Teagasc squared up in the last Cork GAA Interfirm game of the year in the Junior Hurling Cup final on Ballincollig’s excellent floodlit pitch. In a touch, uncompromising game Teagasc held out for a three point victory on a scoreline of 1-09 to 1-06.

This was a game in which both sets of defenders won their respective battles. Teagasc, in particular had a very effective and disciplined rearguard, which meant that UCC had the greater share of possession they could not convert it into scores. Both full back lines in particular dominated their direct opponents.

The game was nearly ten minutes old before the first score game when UCC’s Stevie Moylan struck a point from play. This was added to with a fine effort from Ronan Spillane. The first ten minutes were particular marked by some forceful play from UCC full back Ray Dervan who dominated the early exchanges. Even then, when Teagasc managed to break through they found UCC goalkeeper Eanna Martin difficult to beat and he pulled off a great point-blank save in a one-on-one situation with a Teagasc corner forward.

The teams traded points between the 12th and 17th before the half’s decisive score game when a Teagasc shot was deflected to the net for the game’s opening goal. The battles remain tense and physical as the game progressed with proceedings threatening to boil over on occasions, but although tough, a foul stroke was rarely pulled.

UCC struggled to create much of an impression up front, but they did manage to win a 20m free with 23 minutes gone. Stevie Moylan stepped up to the place ball and his rocket of a shot crashed against the cross-bar and rebounded to safety.

The first half ended in controversy with a high ball into the UCC goalmouth leading to a ‘schmozzole’ in the square. UCC keeper Martin tried to smother the ball as Teagasc did all of their best to force man, ball and all over the line. In the midst of the melee when arms, legs and hurley flailing it appeared as if one of the UCC defenders had inadvertently knocked ball over the line. However, with Conrad Donovan reaching for the green flag referee Donal Kickham declared that in the midst the excitement he had blown the half-time whistle. The outcome of some heated exchanges with Teagasc players and management did not alter his view and the teams with to the half-time break with Teagasc two point in front, 1-03 to 0-04.

On the resumption it was clear that Teagasc were going to try and atone for the perceived injustice at the end of the first half. The thundered into the game. UCC introduced Rory Rice to the half forward to try and get a physical foothold in this vital sector of the field. Although Teasgasc were now controlling possession they found UCC centre back Fergal Moloney in dominant form while behind him, corner back Frank Tobin was alert to every breaking ball.

Teagasc stretched their lead with two long range points. UCC replied with a well-taken effort from Frank Hickey that kept the gap to a manageable three points. However, between the 38th and 46th Teagasc pushed clear and established a six-point lead. The physical exchanges remained fierce and a few bouts of fisticuffs ensued. One in particular saw the diminutive Stevie Moylan square up to the 6’ 4’’ Teagasc centre forward. The height differential was negated as they fell to the ground with players from all sides piling in to sort the situation.

With less than 10 minutes left UCC released Eanna Martin from the confines of the goals in a bid to rescue the situation. Things seemed to be turning UCC’s way when Pat Cremin bundled over a goal just as Martin was taking his new position on the forty. UCC were now back in the game but with scores a premium they could not narrow the gap. Each time UCC raised a white flag, Teagasc responded with a score of their own.

At this stage the UCC half back line was in complete control and they launched ball after ball into the opposing side of the field. At times, however it appeared that Teagasc were playing with an extra man as time and again UCC’s attacking endeavours were thwarted. If UCC were going to get back into this game they needed a goal.

With less than two remaining minutes it looked as if the move of Eanna Martin would deliver this score as he burst through on goal. However he was forced wide and his well struck shot was smartly saved by the Teagasc keeper who tipped it away. UCC pressed forward for the remaining seconds but could not find the game-saving score.

At the final whistle Teagasc deservedly took the honours on a scoreline of 1-09 to 1-06 in what was a tough but enjoyable hour’s hurling.

UCC capture Junior Football Cup

With the winter closing in UCC and County Council played the last Cork Interfirm football game of the year when they met in the final of the Junior Football Cup under the lights in Ballincollig on Monday night.

This was the strongest team that UCC had assembled for the year and with the Council struggling to reach a quorum of 15 players it was clear that UCC would have the advantage. However, this belief seemed to feed through t0 the UCC team once the game started and they started in a very lethargic manner.

UCC had a lot of possession but running down blind alleys, a series of misplaced passes and ill-chosen shots saw very few scores registered. As the half progressed all of UCC’s players got more involved in the play.

Centre forward Dave Stafford was dominating the aerial exchanges and won a series of County Council kick outs in a row with some fine fetches. UCC finally began to make their dominance tell on the scoresheet and kicked over some good points. The Council changed their kick-out strategy and avoided the midfield battleground that was being won by UCC. They targeted low, short kick outs to the wings that paid immediate dividends.

The Council got a few points to keep them in the game but a period of sustained pressure as the first half drew to a close saw them create a number of clear-cut goal chances. One of these was kicked wide but they were extremely unlucky when a second chance was blazed against the cross-bar with goalkeeper Diarmaid Hallissey beaten. UCC were fortunate to be 0-09 to 0-04 ahead at the break.

The County Council pushed more players forward in the second half in an immediate bid to narrow the gap. However, this backfired at the UCC forwards were able to exploit the extra space they were now offered. Instead of getting the goal that would get them back into the game, County Council conceded one with unmarked wing-forward Paddy O’Gorman fisting an excellent 40 yard pass from man-of-the-match Ronan Power to the net.

UCC added a second goal a few minutes later from Conor O’Regan which killed the game off as a contest. County Council did not simply throw in the towel and they did press for the goal which would have narrowed the gap. However, they found Diarmaid Hallissey in a determined mood and a couple of fine stops, and one excellent one in particular, rebuffed their efforts.

UCC substitute James Moylan was nicely teed up for UCC’s third goal which finished their scoring. County Council were determined to raise a green flag and a fine move saw their full-forward put through in a one-on-one situation and he made no mistake with a tidy finish to the bottom left hand corner.

By the final whistle UCC had ran out deserving 3-13 to 1-07 winners and Dave Stafford collected UCC’s first silverware of what has been a long year of interfirm GAA.

UCC cannot get past Prison Officers

In an good game of hurling played under the lights at Mallow’s excellent GAA grounds, UCC second venture in provincial competitions came to a halt. UCC could not match their exploits of 2008 when they reached the final of the Munster Junior Championship with a two-point defeat seeing them exit at the semi-final stage.

From the start it was clear that the Limerick Prison Officers would have the advantage in the physical exchanges but UCC turned to their extra mobility to provide them with an edge. UCC started well but were largely dependent on frees from Eanna Martin for scores. At the other end the Prison Officers used the wind that was at their back and struck over some fine long range efforts.

The score was tied at four points a piece when the Prison Officers worked a good goal with their corner forward first timing a ball to the net after being put through by a good through ball. The teams exchanged points from here until half time and at the short whistle the Prison Officers were two points to the good, 1-07 to 0-08.

The second half followed the pattern of the first. UCC had a lot of possession but could not convert it into scores from play. When UCC did threaten they were invariably fouled and all of these indiscretions were punished by the unerring Martin.

Throughout the second half the Prison Officers always managed to keep their noses in front although their were five occasions when UCC narrowed the gap to a single point. Each time the Prison Officers replied and re-established their half time lead of two points.

UCC did have one gloriously goal chance with 10 minutes left but the ground shot was dragged left and wide. UCC’s lighter forwards were not able to forge a way past the strong Prison Office defence to create another goal chance. UCC were always in touch but were never able to tie the game.

UCC did have one final chance when a dipping 30 yard shot cleaned the crossbar by less than a foot. This was to be the final action of the game with the final whistle sounding immediately afterwards seeing Limerick Prison Officers deservedly proceed to the Munster Junior Championship final on a scoreline of 1-16 to 0-17.

UCC Qualify for Junior Cup Final

UCC played The Bank of New York in the semi-final of this year’s Junior Football Cup under the floodlights in Delaneys GAA Grounds on Monday night. UCC’s ability to the crucial scores was decisive and they ran out relatively comfortable winners on a 2-17 to 0-11 scoreline.

UCC began brightly but some poor early shooting saw them fail to capitalise on their early possession. A point a piece from corner forwards Ronan Spillane and Pat Dennehy sent UCC on their way. A well-taken goal from Paddy Gorman pushed UCC into an early five point advantage. After a jittery first few minutes Bank of New York settled to their task and got back into the game with a couple of points.

UCC excellent midfielders Ronan Power and Colm O’Connell dominated the aerial exchanges and provided a steady supply of ball to their forwards. A couple of excellent long range points from Ronan Spillane saw UCC maintain their lead. The teams exchanged points for the last ten minutes of the half, and on Donal Kickham’s half-time whistle UCC lead by 1-08 to 0-06.

Bank of New York came out fast at the start of the second half but the UCC full back line held firm. BNY were limited to a number of long range shots. A notable feature of the second half was the excellent fielding of Rob Phelan under Diarmaid Hallissey’s well-placed kick-outs.

After repelling the early assault from BNY, UCC set about advancing their lead. S0me powerful shooting through the middle from Michael Byrne saw him fire over two excellent points off his left foot. Midfielders Ronan Power and Colm O’Connell both added their name to the scoresheet.

Pat Dennehy maintained his form from the first half and kicked over two more points to bring his total for the hour to four points. His final score, came from a quick free from the 45m line out by the sideline that hopped over the bar after eluding it’s intended target.

With 12 minutes left, Paddy Gorman popped up to knock in his second goal. This came from a lovely drop-shot finish that went in off the right upright. A dubious umpiring decision denied Jerry Reen a legitimate score but his industrious play led to assists for substitute Jamie O’Driscoll to knock over two fine points.

By the end of the game UCC had accumulated an impressive tally of 2-17 leading to a 12-point win that sees UCC qualify for the Junior Football Cup Final where they will come up against Junior A Championship Finalists, County Council.

UCC lose Junior Hurling Final

UCC lost out to Cork Garda in the final of the Cork Junior A Hurling Championship on a scoreline of 3-16 to 0-09. This was a game which Garda never looked like losing and their superiority showed all through.

UCC played with the aid of the breeze in the first half, and although they had plenty of possession, they failed to make much use of it. UCC created plenty of chances but profligate shooting meant they failed to keep in touch on the scoreboard. Over the course of the hour UCC hit over 20 wides which goes a long way to explaining the defeat.

At the half way stage Garda led 1-08 to 0-04. In the second half UCC remained competitive but a continuing failing to convert possession into scores meant that the game quickly went out of their reach. A far more impressive Garda outfit made much better use of the chances they created and established an unassailable lead. In the final ten minutes Garda added two further goals to record an emphatic win.

With Cork Garda having won the 2009 All-Ireland Junior Championship they now go on to represent Cork in the Munster Senior Championship. UCC, as Cork runners up, now progress onto the Munster Junior Championship where a better performance all round is required.

This will be UCC’s second time competing in Munster competitions. In 2008 they qualified for the Munster Junior Hurling Final following a win over Wyeth Pharmaceuticals from Clonmel in the semi-final. In the Munster Final they were defeated by Analog Devices of Limerick. This time they will hope to go one step further.

UCC Qualify for Junior A Hurling Final

UCC came out on top of a nine-goal semi final in the Junior A Hurling Championship, getting the better of the Bank of New York on a scoreline of UCC Staff 7-13 Bank of New York 2-13. In the end it was UCC'’s ability to get goals that saw them progress to this year’s final.

It was the Bank of New York who settled first and they hit over the first three points of the game. UCC responded with a pointed free from full-forward Stevie Moylan. Bank of New York continued to apply the early pressure and opened up a four point lead. Ger McGlacken hit over a fine point for UCC and corner forward Niall Griffin worked hard to add a point all of his own making. However, these two instances apart UCC failed to make productive use of the possession they had and after 14 minutes BNY led by six points to three.

On the quarter hour mark UCC got a break when long sideline ball broke behind the BNY full back line and Stevie Moylan was on hand to race through and finish to the net. This did not change the general pattern of play as BNY responded to hit over a number of excellent long range points. UCC kept the scoreboard ticking over with a point from Tomas Murray following an excellent cross-field ball by Moylan and a well-taken effort from Olan Casey following a strong run through the heart of the BNY defence.

With five minutes of the first half remaining UCC took the lead for the first time with a great goal by Ger McGlacken, striking on the run to the top corner from just outside the 13m line. This gave UCC a 2-05 to 0-09 led but BNY got back on level terms with two long range frees. Donal Harold struck over the final score of the half to give UCC a one point lead, 2-06 to 0-11 at half time.

UCC had a slight wind advantage for the second half and made immediate use of it with points from Pat Cremin and Niall Griffin. Following the second of these scores corner forward Pat Cremin intercepted a short puckout from the BNY keeper and a clever side-step past the full back put him through on goal and he easily finished to the net. This established the lead that UCC were to maintain for the rest of the game.

Both teams exchanged points before UCC fourth goal came on 45 minutes. A long ball from defence by Fergal Moloney was won by Stevie Moylan who rounded the full back and audaciously tapped the ball over the onrushing keeper. He met the ball on far side and guided it into the empty net. Ger McGlacken and Moylan added points to further extend UCC’s lead.

BNY did not simply give up the game and two quick goals with ten minutes left had narrowed the UCC lead to six points, 4-11 to 2-11. However this was to be as close an BNY got. Moylan scored his hat-trick goal with six minutes left to re-establish UCC’s lead. BNY did push forward but their late pressure only yielded a brace of points.

As BNY sent more and more players forward in a bid to chase the game, UCC’s forwards exploited the space and slack marking left behind. Pat Cremin raised his second green flag of the night with a stunning first-time pull from just inside the 20m line. The very final play of the game saw an unmarked Stevie Moylan score yet another goal as he walked the ball into an empty net.

These late scores which put some daylight between the teams only came about as BNY surged forward in a bid to salvage the game and the six point lead that UCC had entering the final minutes was a truer reflection of proceedings. UCC will now meet Cork Garda in a bid to win the Junior A Championship for only the second time and the first time since 2008.

Poc Fada Competition

As it is the week leading up to the All-Ireland Hurling Final, UCC Staff GAA Club is running a Poc Fada (long strike*) Competition for all staff members.

THE MARDYKE GAA GROUNDS

The aim of the competition is simply to hit the ball as far as you can up the length of the field. It will only take a few minutes to come down and hit a few pocs. People are welcome to come down and try their hand at any stage between the times above. All equipment (hurleys and balls) will be provided.

The competition is open to all staff members (except the organising commitee!) and there will be categories run for all levels. There will be an overall category for all-comers but separate categories will also be held providing everyone with the opportunity to compete and enjoy the event.

For those who are unfamiliar with Hurling and would like to understand the game a quick tutorial will be provided on the basics. Further categories may be added on the day and categories between groups who wish to have their own competition can be quickly organised.

Entry to the competition is FREE. Tickets to a raffle with a first prize of Two All-Ireland Football Final Tickets will be available.

UCC fall to The Bailey Pubs

UCC’s second championship outing in three days saw them fall to The Bailey Pubs in the semi-final of the Junior A Football Championship on Monday evening in the magnificent setting of the Mardyke GAA Grounds. UCC could not follow up their excellent win in the hurling championship from Monday with victory in this game.

UCC began the game brightly and had most of the early possession as The Bailey Pubs had to wait a few minutes before getting their 15th man onto the field. The first score of the game was an excellent left foot effort from full forward Declan O’Connell. UCC spurned a number of other chances for scores.

At the other end The Bailey Pubs were far more efficient in front of goal and kicked a number of fine points to move into the lead. UCC responded with a pointed free from Don O’Connell and a fine point from midfielder Tom Byrne.

As The Bailey Pubs withdrew one forward as a seventh defender, UCC goalkeeper Diarmaid Hallissey was able to find loose players with well-placed kick-outs. However, UCC struggled to move the ball down the field and a number of turnovers saw chances created for The Bailey Pubs inside line, which in the most were converted. For the remainder of the game UCC went to the long kick-out which paid greater dividends as Dave Stafford and Olan Casey dominated the aerial battle for possession.

After fifteen minutes the score was 0-04 to 0-03 in favour of The Bailey Pubs the next five minutes was to prove decisive. An attack right through the UCC defence saw Hallissey pull off a point blank save. The rebound broke to another on rushing attacker who drove hard straight into the UCC square. Although stopped, these efforts were deemed to be illegal and The Bailey Pubs were awarded the game’s first penalty. This was duly dispatched low and hard down to Diarmaid Hallissey’s left.

This stirred UCC into life and a period of sustained pressure saw Don Brosnan and Don O’Connell narrow the gap. The Bailey Pubs were not out of the game for long and a series of excellent foot-passes the length of the field saw their full forward through on goal and he made no mistake with only the keeper to beat. In fact, over the next few minutes The Bailey Pubs could have put the game beyond all doubt but a number of further goal chances were spurned or denied by fine saves by the UCC goal minder.

The closing minutes of the half saw the teams exchange points to leave the half-time score 2-05 to 0-06 in favour of The Bailey Pubs. UCC began the second half with a much improved work rate and through points from Declan O’Connell and Michael Byrne they had narrowed the gap to two points. This was to be as close as UCC got as The Bailey Pubs dominated possession for the large periods of the second half. Their continued excellent use of the foot-pass, created the opportunities for their inside line who duly obliged by kicking the points that restored their five point lead.

These scores included one superb right-foot effort from deep in the right corner – the wrong side for such an effort. UCC replied with Don O’Connell kicking over a close-range free, but these were more than matched by two excellent long range frees from The Bailey Pubs free-taker when frustrated UCC defenders fouled as The Bailey Pubs were continually able to create an unmarked player on the overlap.

With 12 minutes remaining UCC were granted a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty. A defender for The Bailey Pubs swung back with his arm to strike Don O’Connell as he burst out of the square with the ball following an excellent high catch. O’Connell dusted himself off and struck the ball to the exact same spot as The Bailey Pub’s first half penalty. This goal brought UCC right back into game as the score stood 2-09 1-09 in favour of The Bailey Pubs

Although UCC were granted the lifeline it was The Bailey Pubs who responded best. They now switched to maintaining possession and denied UCC the opportunity to further narrow the gap. As UCC funnelled back to try and regain possession they found they had few players in an attacking position and generally gave the ball back as quick as they got it.

With five minutes left the game was killed off when a cross-field ball from right to left saw two from The Bailey Pubs unmarked and their left half back side-stepped Diarmaid Hallissey to finish easily to the net. UCC did manage one more score through Don Brosnan but the final score of the game belonged to The Bailey Pubs. When the final whistle blew it was they who progressed to the final of the Junior A Football Championship against County Council.

UCC make winning start to Hurling Championship

In a high-scoring encounter played in Bishopstown on Monday evening UCC advanced to the semi-finals of the Junior A Hurling Championship with a 2-24 to 2-11 win over Teagasc/Cattle Breeders. Although there was a wide gap at the end it was only in the last ten minutes that UCC pulled clear.

Teagasc played with the aid of the strong breeze in the first half but it was UCC who started the brighter. Top scorer Eanna Martin fired over a smart point with UCC’s first attack after 30 seconds. He followed this a minute later with a batted goal, after being set up by a Ronan Spillane solo run from the left corner. Martin continued to dominate proceedings, and after four minutes, fired over another point, on this occasion of his own making.

Teagasc were not about to let UCC completely dictate proceedings, and with their half back line getting on top, began to provide possession for their attack. Aided by the strong breeze Teagasc hit over a number of excellent long-range efforts, but they also saw a number of other efforts drift wide. The Teagasc defence continued to dominate their UCC opponents and a huge clearance turned defence into immediate attack with the Teagasc full-forward first-timing an excellent shot to the back of the UCC net.

The game was now being controlled by Teagasc and they added two more white flags to open up a three point lead at the mid-way stage of the first half. The UCC attack were struggling to make inroads and it was midfielder Pa Cronin’s brace of points which kept the scoreboard ticking over.

An attack down the right hand side put the Teagasc corner forward through on goal and he struck the ball past the onrushing Seamus Cronin. A small bit of commotion ensued about the legitimacy of score but referee Donal Kickham quickly put umpire Diarmaid Hallissey right and the green flag was duly raised.

Teagasc were now four points to the fore, 2-5 to 1-04, but a couple of well-placed puck-outs saw UCC gain some much needed primary possession which led to half-forward Brendan Keohane and impressive midfielder Pa Cronin scoring, to narrow the gap to two points. With half time approaching the teams traded points to leave UCC two points in arrears at the break, 1-06 to 2-07, though they would have the benefit of the strong breeze in the second half.

UCC’s start to the second half meant the breeze was of little use as they did not have the ball. Teagasc once again extended their lead to four points with a point from play and a huge free from their own half against the wind by their centre back. UCC finally settled to their task and began to chip into the Teagasc lead. Points from Eanna Martin, Ronan Spillane, Pa Cronin and Leo Sexton narrowed the gap but Teagasc kept their noses in front with a couple of their own.

The UCC half back line of Timmy Geaney, Fergal Moloney and Michael O’Donoghue provided an avalanche of possession for UCC’s attacking sextet and as the half wore on they finally began to make inroads. An excellent cross-field ball from Tomas Murray saw full-forward Seamus Coffey flash a shot over the bar from 20m when a shot for goal could have paid more dividends. With the game entering the final quarter this score saw UCC take the lead for the first time since Eanna Martin’s quick-fire scoring burst at the start of the game.

The goal UCC sought wasn’t long in coming and with their next attack, a strong run through the middle from Eanna Martin drew the last defender, and a well placed pass saw Coffey finish to the Teagasc net. UCC were now in firm control of the game and this goal pushed them four points clear 2-10 to 2-14 with just over ten minutes left.

UCC pressed home this advantage to the full and in the last ten minutes UCC outscored Teagasc by ten points to one. Pa Cronin added to his impressive haul from midfield with three fine points in this period. His midfield partner Tomas Murray also struck over a couple of excellent long range efforts. The closing minutes saw UCC’s full forward line of Martin, Coffey and Spillane hit over points as those further out the field created a host of opportunities.

In the end UCC ran out comfortable winners, 2-24 to 2-11 and now move on to play the winners of North Cork Garda and Bank of New York in the semi-finals of the championship.

UCC win Championship opener

In an entertaining game played in Bishopstown on Wednesday evening UCC Staff edged out North Cork Garda by one point in the first round of the Junior A Football Championship. Goals from Donagh O’Mahony and Jerry Reen set up UCC’s first even win at this grade.

The game begun in bright, benign conditions but this suddenly changed after just three minutes as a thundershower poured rain down on proceedings. UCC started brightly but some poorly struck shots failed to find the target. After just five minutes UCC’s right half forward, Tom Byrne, had to leave the game with a hamstring injury and he was replaced by UCC’s solitary substitute, Donagh O’Mahony. O’Mahony made an immediate impact kicking a fine point off his left with his first touch of the ball.

UCC continued to gain a lot of possession through the midfield pairing of Dave Stafford and Liam Murphy. This led to further points from Michael Byrne and Jerry Reen, who saw an effort for goal deflected over the bar by the North Cork Garda goalkeeper.
After 10 minutes North Cork Garda finally won some meaningful possession and it quickly became evident that their forwards would score if given the opportunity. Two excellent long range points were quickly added to the North Cork Garda account to cut the UCC lead to one.

UCC’s next possession saw Seamus Coffey’s half-blocked effort fall kindly to Donagh O’Mahony who first timed the ball to the roof of the net to open up a four point lead with fifteen minutes gone. North Cork Garda responded immediately and fired over two more excellent long range points. North Cork Garda did have the benefit of a slight wind but their ability to kick scores from distance should have caused concern for UCC’s management team of Rory Rice and Sean O’Leary had they seen it.

Michael Byrne was always involved in the game at centre forward for UCC and one of many strong runs saw a ‘45’ awarded to UCC. Centre back Mike Mennis stepped forward and put a great effort over the bar against the slight wind. By this time the thunderstorm had abated which allowed all concerned to dry off and saw UCC management team resume their position on the line after seeking sanctuary in the dressing rooms. Another fine point from left half forward Jerry Reen and another from Michael Byrne saw UCC build up a three point lead as half time approached.

A lack of composure in possession when on the attack with only a minute left in the first half saw UCC lose the ball. North Cork Garda quickly moved the ball forward and worked another fine long range point. North Cork Garda won the resultant kick out and the ball was sent straight back over the bar. As the half time whistle went UCC were one point ahead, 1-06 to 0-08.

The second half was played in excellent conditions and it was the setting sun that provided the only weather problem. UCC won a lot of possession with half backs Anthony Walsh and Eoin Barrett picking up a lot of breaks from the UCC midfielders. Another goal-bound effort from Jerry Reen was deflected over for a point, and this was quickly added to with a pointed free from Don O’Connell to open up a three point lead for UCC.

North Cork Garda replied with a point of their own, but ten minutes into the second half UCC opened up the decisive lead when a clever handpass from Seamus Coffey put Jerry Reen through on goal and his excellent finish gave the North Cork Garda goalkeeper no chance on this occasion.

UCC did not push on from this position but always managed to keep their noses in front. North Cork Garda did threaten to get back into the game with ten minutes left when an excellent move down the left wing saw them work the ball towards the UCC goal where an over zealous tackle saw North Cork Garda awarded a penalty. UCC goalkeeper Diarmaid Hallissey was rooted to the spot as an excellent kick from the 11m mark by the North Cork Garda centre forward found the bottom left corner of the net with umpire Conrad Donovan reaching for the green flag.

UCC’s lead was now down to two, but UCC’s next attack saw the ball worked into right corner forward Stephen Moylan who curled a delicious left foot effort over the bar. With four minutes left Don O’Connell kicked the insurance score to give UCC a four point lead once again.

North Cork Garda did not throw in the towel and they pushed everything forward in a bid to snatch the goal that would get them back into the game. On a number of occasions they worked the ball into the danger zone but they were repelled with some great tackling and heavy hitting from UCC full back Olan Casey. Deep in added time North Cork Garda were awarded a free about 50m from the UCC goal. A high ball played into the square was excellently grabbed by the North Cork Garda centre forward who kicked a super finish into the exact spot he had placed the penalty some ten minutes earlier.

The lead was now down to one and the game came down to the final play as the referee announced that there was only seconds left. UCC excellent centre back Mike Mennis took on the kick-out responsibilities and his booming kick cleared halfway with Anthony Walsh running on to pick up the breaking ball. Walsh fed the ball quickly to Stephen Moylan with the referee blowing full time as Moylan maintained position by the sideline in the corner.

After being comfortably ahead at one stage UCC were relieved to hear the final whistle confirm their one point victory on a scoreline of 2-12 to 2-11. UCC now move on to the semi-final of the Junior A Championship where they will face The Bailey Pubs in a few weeks time.

UCC lose out in Junior Hurling Cup

In a busy week for the UCC Staff GAA team, the hurlers lined out in the semi-final of the Junior Hurling Cup against Cork Garda in the scenic Mardyke GAA grounds on Wednesday evening. With the hard ground extremely slippery after a light shower conditions were testing but this did not prevent a fine game from been played out. When the final whistle went Cork Garda were ahead but UCC will rue a lack lustre first half that left them with two much to do.

UCC won the toss and played with the breeze in the first half. However, from the throw-in, Cork Garda seemed to be interested outfit. They hit a couple of quick points to open up a two point lead. The UCC attack finally kicked into gear and a well-struck Stephen Moylan from the right wing was followed by a point from play from Ronan Spillane.

Cork Garda responded straightaway and hit three unanswered points and but for a number of errant shots could have pulled further ahead. Two more frees from Moylan and a pointed effort from corner forward James Moylan were separated by a couple of excellent points from play from the Cork Garda half forward line.

With Garda two points in the lead with twenty minutes gone, the game changed in a two-minute period when Garda struck for two fine goals. Both were the result of first-time pulls on the sliotar from balls that broke around the UCC goalmouth. Cork Garda built on this strong position and with apparent lethargy among the UCC outfit Garda held a deserved 2-08 to 0-06 advantage at the half time interval.

Following some stern words from stand-in coach Rory Rice, UCC were much more effective in the second half. The defence led by centre back Fergal Moloney got on top of their Garda opponent’s while the UCC attack now began to take the direct route to goal after a first half which saw them regularly take the soft option.

UCC’s bright start saw midfielder Brendan Keohane hit over a point of his left with Stephen Moylan adding a brace from play. Although Garda opportunities were now limited they made the most of the few chances that came their way, and some excellent shooting saw them maintain their halftime lead.

UCC’s excellent midfielder, Shane Horgan, began to control the game and he provided great possession for the UCC attack which was now functioning much better. A high ball to the square was excellently finished to the net with an overhead flick by Stephen Moylan after it broke his way. A neat interchange of passes between Ronan Spillane and Stephen Moylan saw James Moylan put through on goal and his low shot on the run beat the Garda keeper.

With a little more than ten minutes remaining UCC were now back in the game and the Garda lead was cut to three points. An extremely dubious line ball call from the referee favoured Garda and as the UCC defence argued the toss and very intelligent cut was played across the goals and finished over the bar by a Garda midfielder. Garda won the resultant puck out and worked an opening to hit over a fine point to restore a five point lead.

This little passage of play effectively sealed UCC’s fate as, try as they might, they could not narrow the Garda lead. UCC’s direct running approach of the second half saw them awarded a number of close in frees late in the game but these were dealt with by the Garda rearguard with one stinging effort by Ronan Spillane knocked over the bar by the Garda goalkeeper.

In the end Garda held out for a six point win on a 2-17 to 2-11 scoreline and it is they who moved on to the final of the Junior Hurling Cup. After the week’s activities that saw UCC from the cup competitions UCC must now regroup as they face important upcoming fixtures in both the hurling and football championships.

UCC shot down by Naval Services

UCC bowed out of this year’s Junior B Football Cup following a nine point defeat to a much improved Naval Services side in game played in Shanbally on Monday evening.

UCC lost the toss and played against the first half facing a very stiff breeze and up the substantial slope of the second pitch of Shamrocks fine grounds in Shanbally. In spite of this UCC started brightly and full forward Willie Fahy kicking a fine point. Unfortunately most of the play was at the other end of the field for the rest of the half and this proved to be UCC’s sole score of the opening period.

A very strong Naval Services team dominated possession and kept UCC pinned into their own half of the field. In response the UCC full back line defended resolutely with full back Sean O’Leary marshalling those around him.

UCC struggled under Diarmaid Hallissey’s kick-outs and this gave a steady stream of possession to the Naval Services attack. It is a credit to the UCC defence that few goal chances came the way of the Navy and all their scores in the first half resulted in the white flag being raised by hard-working umpire, Conrad Donovan.

UCC created a small number of chances throughout the first half and should had added to their tally when a close-range free ballooned wide. The Naval Services kicked nine scores in the first half and met the half time whistle with an eight point lead. This was not an insurmountable lead as UCC now had the breeze and the slope to their advantage.

The second half began at a much livelier pace with the work rate and effort off all UCC players upped considerably. This was rewarded with a number of fine points with Willie Fahy adding to his tally, Tom Byrne kicking a fine free from distance and the dangerous Don O’Connell working a fine individual effort.

At this stage the game’s stand-in referee became the focus of increased ire from both sides as a number of heavy challenges went unpunished. Naval Services responded to UCC’s early challenge and kicked two points from play, as the breeze softened late in the evening.

UCC responded to the physical challenge in the middle of the field and Dave Stafford and Olan Casey thundered into the game with Anthony Walsh moving quickly onto the breaking ball. A high ball won in the middle of the field was played quickly into the square by Stafford and an intelligent knock down by Willie Fahy was finished to the net by the onrushing Don O’Connell. With 15 minutes left, UCC were now back in the game and added another point from play from corner forward Seamus Coffey to cut the lead to three points.

However, UCC did not build on this position and instead of continuing the tactic of playing the ball first time to the full forward line began to over elaborate in the middle third of the field. One such occasion saw UCC lose possession and a couple of passes later the ball flashed past Diarmaid Hallissey in the UCC goal and Oliver Bradley raised the green flag.

From the resultant kick out Naval Services won the ball and a high speculative ball into the square someone found it’s way directly to the net and the UCC challenge was effectively ended as the Naval Services had built up a nine point advantage.

From here until the end the teams exchanged two points each with Tom Byrne and Jerry Reen hitting the UCC scores. Although the non-watch-wearing referee had been told from the sideline that the second half'’s 30 minutes had elapsed there was still time for UCC to be awarded a late penalty as Don O’Connell could only be hauled to the ground as he burst through on goal.

Once the newly introduced GAA penalty spot was finally determined, O’Connell dusted himself off and his excellent struck shot was superbly saved by the bottom of his right-hand post by the Naval Services keeper. There was no time for the resultant ‘45’ and the Naval Services recorded a deserved victory on a scoreline of 2-12 to 1-06.

UCC get year off to winning start

Last Monday night on the main pitch in Bishopstown GAA Club the UCC Staff GAA Club started the 2010 season with a well-deserved 3-17 to 1-09 win over Cork Teachers in the first round of the Junior Hurling Cup. UCC now go on to play Cork Garda in the semi-final.

UCC lined out with most of the regulars from the last few years in position. Due to an initial shortage of players on the Teachers’ team the game began at 13-a-side. This meant there was plenty of space in the early stages which suited some of UCC’s players but was not so kind to others.

UCC began brightly and hit over the first scores of the game. Stephen Moylan looked dangerous in the extra space available in the full forward line and knocked over a fine point. Midfielder John Gorman burst through the Teachers’ defence and from 15 yards fired over the bar when a goal looked on. The Teachers’ goalkeeper made a number of fine saves that encouraged UCC to take their points rather than go for goals.

Pat Cremin also made use of the extra space, scoring one fine point and laying on an assist for two more. After eight minutes UCC led four points to zero but two quick points from the Teachers quickly narrowed the gap. UCC restored their lead with a well-worked points from Daniel Foley and Ronan Spillane. Eanna Martin added two points from frees and a fine long distance effort from play.

After twenty minutes UCC led by eight points to three. The UCC defence was well marshalled by Rory Rice who covered right across the line. He was ably assisted by the traditional first-time clearances of Sean O’Leary and Danny Buckley.

The first half’s defining moment came on 25 minutes when a high ball towards the square was bundled over the line by Stephen Moylan for a scrappy goal that put some clear daylight between the teams. An exchange of points between the teams left the half time score at 1-11 to 0-05 in favour of UCC.

By half time the Teachers had a full complement of players and the game resumed for the second half at 15-a-side. UCC dropped John Gorman back to centre half and he gave a dominant display in the second half, and along with wing backs Fergal Moloney and Donagh O’Mahony, they provided plenty of possession for the UCC attack.

For much of the second half the UCC attack misfired and didn’t really press home their advantage. It was much the same at the other end as Cork Teachers had plenty of possession but could not find the scores that would get them back into the game. UCC goalkeeper Seamus Cronin was alert to a couple of well-struck shots that bounced off the hard surface.

UCC’s best forward continued to be Stephen Moylan and he created a number of opportunities, but his colleagues failed to apply the required finish. UCC’s early first scores in the second half came from midfielder Brendan Keohane.

Ten minutes into the second half corner-forward Pat Cremin caught a high ball and only a rugby tackle prevented him from goaling. However, the green flag was raised moments later when Eanna Martin struck a brilliant penalty to the roof of the net. Even with an abundance of opportunities it was only now that UCC had assured victory.

Cork Teachers continued to plug away and their efforts were rewarded with a fine goal from their full forward. They failed to build on this and a number of chances for goals and points were squandered. With ten minutes to go UCC won a second penalty but this time Eanna Martin’s effort flew over the bar.

UCC added more points from Moylan, Cremin and Martin. With eight minutes to go Pat Cremin added UCC’s third goal. This came after Eanna Martin’s strong run through the middle was only halted by another rugby-style tackle but the referee played the advantage which allowed Cremin to force the ball over the line.

In the closing minutes UCC had a goal disallowed when Seamus Coffey was adjudged to be in the square after neatly flicking Daniel Foley’s strike to the net. At that stage the result was not in doubt and UCC ran out convincing 3-17 to 1-09 winners. UCC now play Cork Garda in the semi-final of the Junior Hurling Cup.

Success for UCC in Murphy Cup Final

UCC captured their second Interfirm football cup of the year with a deserved win over South West Energy Services (SWS) in the Murphy Cup A Final. A strong second half performance under the excellent floodlights in Ballincollig saw UCC come out on top on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-09. UCC trailed by two points at half time, 0-04 to 0-06 but turned it around after the break and ran out seven point winners.

UCC started the game brightly and dominated possession for large periods. However they failed to convert this possession into scores as the final ball into the full forward line was poor. From limited possession SWS looked more dangerous and kicked the first scores of the game.

UCC finally got off the mark with a well taken free from Don O'Connell. At the other end SWS were causing problems for the UCC defence and they were awarded a large number of frees. In fact, five of SWS's six scores in the first half were the result of indiscretions from the UCC defence. Throughout the half it seemed that the UCC full forward line had the measure of their markers but misplaced and delayed passes meant they failed to take advantage to this. One of the better passes saw Garret Casey nearly goal with a good fisted effort.

UCC were largely dependant on the industry of centre forward Michael Byrne to make inroads. He kicked a fine point from play and earned a free which was converted by Don O'Connell. UCC's final score of the half came from O'Connell to leave the gap at two points at half time, UCC 0-04 SWS 0-06.

During the break UCC introduced Dave Stafford to midfield and Ronan Power came on at half forward. These two players had a huge role in swinging the game UCC's way. Stafford added great strength and ball winning ability in the middle of the field while Power kicked over three superb points from play.

UCC were much the better team in the second half and had quickly overturned the half time deficit with a point from Power and two more from Don O'Connell, who finished with 1-05 to his name. Dave Prendergast really came into the game in the second half and kicked over a great point following a storming run down the left wing from half back. This had UCC two points in front, eight points to six.

A sustained period of pressure saw UCC awarded a penalty after an SWS defender was forced to pick the ball straight off the ground in the goalmouth when UCC seemed certain to score. However, Don O'Connell's well hit shot beat the keeper but struck the bottom of the right-hand post and bounced to safety. SWS were boosted by this and in the following few minutes hit two of their three second half points to level the scores at eight points apiece.

UCC regained their foothold in the game with some great catches from Colm O'Connell and Dave Stafford. One such catch by O'Connell saw him feed wing back Donal Og O Donovan who led a great passing move through the SWS defence but the end result saw John Eakins pull his shot narrowly wide of the right-hand post.

UCC didn't have long to wait for the game's defining score which came after 15 minutes of the secong half. Another fine catch by Colm O'Connell saw UCC work the ball through for Don O'Connell to palm the ball first time to the net. UCC built on their advantage by adding further points from Ronan Power and Jerry Reen to open up a decisive six point lead, 1-11 to 0-08 as the game moved into the final ten minutes.

SWS responded with a point but the UCC defence held firm as SWS sought the goal that would bring them back into the game. This was epitomised by Diarmaid Herlihy who dived bravely in front of a goalbound effort and took a heavy blow. In goal Diarmaid Hallissey was always decisive and a first time clearance from him was won by Stafford in the middle of the field. He laid the ball off to the onrunning Donal Og O'Donovan and an excellent quick ball delivered from distance saw the hardworking Garret Casey beat his man and kick a fine point to push UCC further ahead.

UCC's last score came when Dave Prendergast reprised his storming run of earlier in the half and cut straight through from his half back berth to kick a stunning point from 35 yards. Shortly afterwards the final whistle went with UCC winners by 1-13 to 0-09.

UCC captain Olan Casey accepted the cup and gave a fine speech. Afterwards midfielder Colm O'Connell was deservedly presented with the Man of the Match award. After losing their first six football finals in a row (see sidebar) UCC have now completed a much more positive three-in-a-row with victories in the Finals of the 2008 Junior B Cup, the 2009 Junior Cup and now the 2009 Murphy Cup. The next step will be to add a Championship success which has so far proved elusive.

Last Second Goal Costs UCC Title

UCC lost by one point to Bank of New York in the Junior B Hurling Championship Final played under lights in the Mardyke on Wednesday night. Deep in stoppage time UCC led by two points but a ground shot following a 65 that was dropped into the square saw Bank of New York score a match-winning goal. The final whistle blew before the puck out could be taken.

UCC started the game very poorly and in truth were lucky to be only four points down at half time. BNY were completely on top for the opening period but some wayward shooting meant they were only three points to the good after 12 minutes. UCC finally got off the mark with a well taken Mike Wilkinson point but BNY were completely outplaying the UCC midfield and half back line.

BNY struggled to make use of their possession but added on two more points to open up a four point lead. UCC then had two great goal opportunities in quick succession but failed to take advantage of either. Wilkinson apart, a lack of a credible threat upfront was limiting UCC's chances. Wilkinson added a second point and Gerard McGlacken worked hard to knock over a fine point.

Bob Dunphy, Rory Rice and Denis Murphy were under constant pressure in the UCC full back line and their efforts kept UCC in the game. BNY had the lion's share of possession but a tendency to over-elaborate and some ill-chosen shots cost them on the scoreboard. At the half time whistle the score was 0-08 to 0-04.

During the break UCC introduced Eanna Martin on the 40' and moved McGlacken to full forward. Following the restart UCC were a transformed team with overall workrate and effort levels far higher than in the first half. Martin, along with Ronan Spillane and Colm O'Connell on the wings finally began to make inroads on the BNY half back line.

UCC shot over quick points from Spillane and Wilkinson. These were added to with a well worked goal from Eanna Martin following a strong run through the middle. UCC had now wiped out BNY's half time advantage but BNY responded with some good points of their own to restore a two point lead. Soon afterwards Ger McGlacken pounced on a loose ball and crashed a brilliant first time shot to the net for UCC's second goal. UCC could have built on this but some gilt-edged goal chances were squandered.

A high ball to the UCC goal mouth was forced over the line into the net to get BNY back into the game. The melee that led to the goal saw UCC full back Rory Rice suffer a nasty belt to the knee and following a lengthy delay he had to leave the field.

However following a quick dash of water and a rub of an ice pack Rice re-entered the fray and manned the centre forward position. He had an immediate impact and crashed over a great point. UCC were well on top at this stage and responded well to the BNY goal. Further points were added by Spillane and Wilkinson. Eanna Martin complemented these with a couple of fine frees with BNY's response limited to a couple of points.

Entering added time UCC were one point ahead. Substitute Niall Morrisey hit over an excellent point and UCC were now seemingly headed for victory. A late goalbound effort from BNY was deflected out for over the endline. For the resultant 65 the packed goalmouth seemed inpenetrable but somehow a tame ground shot from BNY found its way over the line for the winning goal. This put BNY into a 2-13 to 2-12 lead and the final whistle was blown before play could be restarted.

Losing to a last minute goal is obviously disappointing but following a poor first half UCC were lucky to be only four points behind. Even when UCC were on top in the second half BNY managed to keep in touch and it was this resiliance that left them in position to benefit from the last minute goal.

Since being reformed in 2004 this was UCC's 16th final in Interfirm competitions. From those 16 final appearances UCC have garnered five victories (and one walkover). UCC have one remaining chance for silverware with the Murphy Cup Football Final against South West Energy Services on Monday night.

Garda to the Fore in Junior Hurling Replay

Cork Garda ran out convincing winners, 4-13 to 2-07, in the replayed final of the Junior A Hurling Championship. Apart from a brief spell after half time UCC were never really in this game and failed to match their scoring exploits in their previous two games when they hit 4-15 and 2-18 respectively.

Garda started as they meant to continue and hit the opening point of the game. Further points from play were added with UCC's response limited to two long range frees from Eanna Martin. A high speculative ball into the UCC goal found it's way to the net via the Garda full-forward and although clearly in the square the goal was allowed to stand using a new interpretation of the "not interfering with play" clause in the rule book.

Garda continued to press ahead and it was clear that after missing plenty of scores in the drawn game they were not going to make the same mistake in the replay. The UCC defense, in which Denis Twomey and Timmy Geaney once again excelled, was under constant pressure as UCC failed to make any inroads upfront. UCC clearances were quickly returned with interest by Garda. The pressure eventually told and the concession of a needless foul led to a Garda penalty. This was not the best struck shot in the world but it still found its way to the corner of the net. A couple of more excellent points and Garda had built up a deserved 2-06 to 0-02 lead.

UCC finally found some traction up front in the closing minutes of the first half. This time a high speculative ball was played into the Garda goal and although clearly in the square Pat Cremin bundled the ball over the line and as at the other end the goal stood. Garda responded with a super goal following a brilliant low shot from 15 yards to the corner of the net. A great long range point from play from Gerard McGlacken concluded the scoring for the first half and UCC trailed by nine points at the break, 3-06 to 1-03.

UCC started the second half in a much more positive manner. The move of Rory Rice to midfield and the introduction of Fergal Moloney at full back added some much needed resolve. A pointed free from Eanna Martin and a fine point from play from a tight angle by Mattie Collins reduced the lead to seven points after the opening minutes.

A long puck-out from Seamus Cronin fell kindly to Ronan Spillane who took off on a solo run from 45 yards out. He beat his own man for pace, before flicking the ball over the head of the onrushing corner back and collecting the ball at the far side. He continued goalwards and a brilliant dummy past the full back left him with only the keeper to beat. A lovely flick under the body of the keeper finished the ball to the net for a great goal. The lead was now down to five and UCC were back in the game with 15 minutes to go with the score 3-06 to 2-04.

However, this was short lived as Garda quickly upped the ante and hit a succession of fine points to restore, and subsequently extend, their nine point advantage. Garda were well on top at this stage and pinged the ball across the field to unmarked colleagues to create a number of openings. The game was fully killed off with five minutes to go when Garda scored their fourth goal.

UCC did manage scores from an Eanna Martin free and towards the end Seamus Coffey added to a ball that was played into the square which flew over the bar from his hurley. At the final whistle Cork Garda ran out deserving 12 point winners, 4-13 to 2-07, and it is they who progress to the Munster Championship.

Thrilling Draw in Junior Hurling Final!

UCC and Cork Garda played out a highscoring draw in the final of the Junior A Hurling Championship. After a thrilling affair the final score was UCC 2-18 Cork Garda 4-12 with UCC full forward Gerard McGlacken hitting an instinctive point deep in stoppage time to force the draw. This was a great game in which UCC hit 2-16 from play with most of the Garda scores also coming play.

Garda had the better start of the two teams but missed a number of scoreable chances, a pattern which was to continue throughout the game. UCC settled down and Rory Doherty hit over the first of five first half points from centre forward. This was added to with an excellent point on the run from midfielder Robert Dunphy. Garda had a number of chances from play and placed balls but struggled to hit the target.

Rory Doherty was having no such difficulty at the other end and fired over a number of fine points. The UCC pressure continued to build and Ronan Spillane and Frank Hickey hit a point apiece. Two points in the space of 60 seconds from wing forward Fergal Moloney pushed UCC into a five point lead with half time approaching. The lead would not last long as Garda got in for a relatively soft goal through the UCC full back line just before the break. This meant UCC led by two points, 0-11 to 1-06.

Garda came out much stronger in the second half and aided by a slight breeze they were back on level terms within two minutes. Shortly afterwards they hit their second goal to push into the lead for the first time but they failed to build on this as they continued to hit a high number of wides. UCC responded well and points from Rory Doherty and Ronan Spillane narrowed the gap. Garda had much more possesion at this stage but many of their passes forward were intercepted by great reading of the game from UCC corner back Denis Twomey, who was the best defender on show.

UCC were struggling to win possession around midfield and the half forward line and needed to get a foothold in the game. Forceful full forward Ger McGlacken was moved to wing forward and he won some vital puck outs. Some great thinking by centre back Timmy Geaney after he was fouled saw him hit a quick free into space for Ronan Spillane who was now at full forward. Spillane took on the full back and a brilliant finish over the keeper registered UCC's first goal of the night and they regained the lead.

In keeping with the nature of the game the lead did not last long and a high ball forward was caught by the Garda full forward who finished to the net to give Cork Garda a one point lead. Garda finally found their range from frees and the teams exchanged points with a great free from the sideline keeping Garda in the lead.

UCC introduced Pat Cremin to the full forward line and he had an immediate impact hitting a goal set up by Ronan Spillane. Cremin added a great point shortly afterwards to give UCC a three point lead. With only a few minutes left it looked like this would be enough to see UCC home.

Garda pushed forward and after being forced to settle for a point from one attack they searched for the winning goal. A great chance fell their way and a ferocious shot was brilliantly saved by UCC goalkeeper Seamus Cronin. The resulting melee saw UCC awarded a free out and it seemed victory was secured as there could only be seconds left.

However play continued up and down the field until the ball found its way to the Garda corner forward who took on the defence and he struck a great shot to the top corner to give Garda a one point lead. All eyes were on the referee but there was time for one more play. Seamus Cronin hit a great puck out and that was won brilliantly by Ger McGlacken. On the turn he hit a great shot over the bar that levelled the game.

This was now to be last play of the game as the referee called for the ball from the puck out with the scores tied, 2-18 to 4-12. Both teams probably felt they could have won it as the lead ebbed and flowed in the thrilling final minutes but both will undoubtedly be happy to get a second chance.

UCC success in First Round of Murphy Cup

On Monday UCC overcame the challenge of Teagasc/Cattle Breeders in the first round of Murphy Football Cup on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-05 in Delaneys GAA Grounds. UCC were always in control of this game and ran out convincing 11 point winners.

After some initial confusion following the toss UCC had the strong wind at their backs in the first half. A bright opening saw points scored by corner forward Don O'Connell and midfielder Colm O'Connell. After ten minutes centre forward Michael Byrne cleanly won a Teagasc 20m kickout and immediately played a great ball through to corner forward Jerry Reen who beat the corner back and rounded the retreating goalkeeper to take a great goal.

Teagasc reacted well but some poor finishing meant their response was limited to two points. UCC added further points from the lively Don O'Connell, Michael Byrne, Brendan Hallissey and Colm O'Connell, and at half time UCC led 1-08 to 0-02.

Teagasc started the second half brightly and even though they more than held their own in the possession stakes their wayward shooting continued. The UCC defence, in which Diarmuid Herlihy and Olan Casey were particularly impressive, held out under the pressure. Some great interplay between excellent midfielders Colm O'Connell and Ronan Power saw UCC extend their lead.

With 15 minutes remaining Teagasc turned their attention to getting the goal or two that would get them back into the game. As with earlier in the game many of these attacks were cut out by Diarmuid Herlihy's great reading of the play, with Robert Phelan in complete control outside him. UCC added a few late points from Colm O'Connell and Dave Prendergast to take the sting out of the Teagasc/Cattle Breeders efforts and ran out 11-point winners.

This was one of UCC's most impressive performances of the year and they await their opponents in the next round of the competition.

The First Game

After being refounded in 2004 UCC's first game was against Cork Airport in the first round of the Junior C Football Cup. This was not a game of much distinction and in a low scoring affair UCC lost out by a goal 2-06 to 1-06.

The team that was led out onto the field in The Farm that day by Frank Dillon was:

The UCC goal was scored by Mike Richardson. Some five years later the soul survivors from that game are Rory Rice (still at full back!), John Eakins and Seamus Coffey.

A full list of the games played in 2004 has been added to the sidebar. This shows that UCC failed to get past the first round in all football competitions played; the Junior C Cup, Junior B Championship and Murphy Cup B. In hurling following another first round defeat in the Junior A Championship, UCC managed their sole win of the year in the semi-final of the Junior B Hurling Championship before going down to Novartis in the final.

It is hoped that a full list of fixtures (and scorelines) for all years can be put together and will be added in due course. After a poor 2004 UCC had a much better 2005 reaching both the Junior C and Junior C1 Championship Finals in football and reversing the previous year's defeat to Novartis in capturing the Junior B Hurling Championship.

UCC Qualify for Junior A Hurling Final

In a high scoring game UCC defeated Bank of New York 4-15 to 3-13 to qualify for the final of the Junior A Hurling Championship where they will meet Cork Garda. UCC played with the aid of a strong wind in the first half but it was the Bank of New York who started best and hit the first scores of the game. UCC responded with a close range free before midfielder Eanna Martin hit an 80 yard free over the bar. This was to be the first of seven well struck frees he scored from 65 metres out and he also added some excellent long range points from play.

After 15 minutes UCC were leading by four points to three when they were awarded a 20m free. The initial goal-bound effort was deflected out for a 65 which the unerring Martin converted. Shortly afterwards Thomas Mullane got on the ball about 40 metres from the Bank of New York goal and after a strong run through the middle he finished to the net to push UCC into the lead.

Both teams exchanged points from there until the half time whistle and UCC led at the break 1-08 to 0-07, with all of their remaining scores coming from Eanna Martin as they struggled to make an impact up front. A four point lead was the least UCC needed as they turned to face the strong wind.

However UCC made a great start to the second half and had doubled their lead after a few minutes. A hard earned goal by full forward Ger McGlacken was quickly followed by a point by Eanna Martin to give an eight point lead which was more in line with what was needed against the stiff breeze.

After a relatively quiet first half UCC's defence saw much more action as UCC failed to keep the ball for long in their attacking half of the field. In this regard corner backs Denis Murphy and Denis Twomey, flanking forceful full back Rory Rice were particularly impressive.

Eventually the pressure told and the Bank of New York got in for two quick goals the second coming from a 20m free. With some impressive long range points of their own the Bank of New York had wiped out UCC's eight point advantage to draw level with 10 minutes to go. The score at this stage was 2-12 apiece with UCC again dependent on Eanna Martin for most of their scores.

With the wind at their backs it looked as if the Bank of New York would push on for victory. However the UCC forwards finally found their range and a great goal by Ronan Spillane was quickly followed by two quick-fire points from substitute James Ryan. The Bank of New York hit back with a third goal of their own to reduce the margin to two points with only a few minutes remaining. However the best they could manage in the closing minutes was a point which was quickly cancelled at the other end. As the Bank of New York pressed forward to find the winning goal to overturn the two point deficit the last play of the game saw the impressive Eanna Martin finish unmarked to the net to seal a five point win.

UCC bow out of Junior B Championship

UCC's unbeaten run for the year came to end following a four point defeat to the Bank of New York in the semi-final of the Junior B Football Championship last Monday. In a game in which UCC started brightly an inability to make full use of the chances created saw them end up on the wrong side of a 1-14 to 1-10 scoreline.

Playing against the wind UCC looked the livelier outfit and a goal created by Ronan Power and finished emphatically by corner forward Don O'Connell after eight minutes pushed UCC into the lead. As the half progressed the Bank of New York made better use of the elements and the chances created, and the teams were level at the short whistle, 1-05 to 0-08. The points for UCC came from Donal Cronin, Jack Crowley and impressive midfielder Ronan Power, whose high fielding was a feature of the game.

UCC had the wind behind them in the second half but failed to take full advantage, missing a large number of scoreable chances. Interspersed with some bad wides UCC did manage points from Don O'Connell, Donal Cronin and Ronan Power.

Some good build-up play (and an increased unwillingness to shoot) saw UCC awarded two penalties, however, neither resulted in a green flag. The first was blazed well wide and while the second did at least hit the target, it only resulted in a point following a good save from the BNY keeper. BNY were far more efficient with the possession they had and added on a number of points before a goal from a powerful shot by their replacement full forward past Diarmaid Hallissey saw them push into a six point lead.

UCC released Michael Burns from full back and he created a number of chances for the forwards but with a lack of true penetration up front the best that could be achieved was a couple of pointed frees. UCC won a number of close range frees in the dying minutes but goalbound efforts were easily diverted by the BNY defence. In the end UCC can have no complaints at the four point defeat.

Last June UCC Staff defeated Project Management in the semi-final of the 2008 Junior Football Cup. A clean sheet from Diarmaid Hallissey and goals from Dave Morrissey, Don O'Connell and Noel Browne secured a 3-10 to 0-10 win. UCC came up against Novartis in the final and came out on the wrong side of a 2-12 to 2-05 scoreline. This was the last in the six-in-a-row of losing football finals and since then UCC have finally captured some football silverware with wins in the 2008 Junior B Cup and the 2009 Junior Cup.

The "B" Sharps

The early successes for the reformed UCC Staff GAA club came in the Junior B Hurling Championship. Unlike in football where six final defeats had to be experienced before success was finally achieved, in hurling defeat in the 2004 final to Novartis was followed by a three-in-a-row success from 2005 to 2007.

12 months later UCC were back in the final and again faced Novartis. In a game in which UCC trailed in all through, it took an injury time scoring blast of a goal and a point from Dave Cashman to secure victory. This game was played under lights in Ballygarvan. Again click the image to enlarge.

The three-in-a-row was completed in 2007 by some fabulous work by Frank Dillon in the corridors of power. UCC and Novartis again progressed to meet in the final. However, it was clear that both teams were under pressure to field. On the day of the final Frank didn't flinch and exuded an air of quiet confidence. Novartis cracked under the pressure and were the first to admit that they couldn't field. Without a ball being pucked Frank had secured a famous win!

In 2008 UCC stepped up a level and won the Junior A Hurling Championship against Cork Garda. This was another game in which UCC trailed and on this occassion the injury time scoring blast of a goal and a point came from Gerard McGlacken. UCC progressed to the Munster Championship where after a win over Tipperary's Wyett Pharmaceuticals from Clonmel they were defeated by Analog Devices of Limerick in the Munster Final.

UCC Defeat Naval Services in Football Championship

In the first round of the Junior B Football Championship, UCC defeated the Naval Services on a scoreline of 3-12 to 1-04. UCC made a bright start in a game that started at 13-a-side and quickly opened up a lead. The Naval Services 14th man (and their jerseys) arrived half way through the first half, but they could not stem the tide and at half time UCC lead 1-07 to 0-01. UCC's goal game from a flash finish by Irish Junior Soccer International, Robbie Butler with Donal Cronin landing some fine points from centre forward.

The second half begin with the Naval Services threatening a mini revival following a well worked goal. Rory Rice entered the fray to shore up the defence and UCC found their feet again. Goals from the excellent Donal Og O'Donovan and Denis Lynch extended UCC's advantage. The win was sealed by an outstanding point from Aussie Nathan Stevenson.

UCC now progress to meet rivals The Bank of New York in the semi-final which has been fixed for Monday 27th July.

UCC Capture 2009 Junior Football Cup

In a lively game against the Bank of New York, UCC Staff GAA won its first Junior Cup title since being reformed in 2004. After a losing run of six football finals in a row, stretching back to 2005, UCC have now been successful in their last two. This win follows the victory over Project Management in the Junior B Cup Final at the end of last year.

The game was played in Bishopstown and UCC won on a scoreline of 3-18 to 2-10. The Man of the Match Award was presented to UCC midfielder Ronan Power after the game.
